Basking In the Golden Shower of the Rich
Fuck the music and movie industry. I am tired of them bitching and complaining about how people are pirating their shit. How can a group of millionaires piss on so many people? How can anyone actually feel sorry for them? I have a pretty large MP3 collection (approximately 8000 songs) and I didn’t pay for any of it. I either downloaded them or ripped them from CDs belonging to friends.
Maybe I am wrong but I won’t buy a CD ever again because I don’t believe in it. I believe that artists should distribute their music for free online and continue to do the CD thing for those that want it but they should tour more. I have no problem laying down the cash to go see a band perform but I will not buy their CD. It’s easy to make a record and stamp a million CDs but it’s hard work getting out there and performing. Give me free MP3s so I can learn about your band and if I like you I will go see your show.
I also download movies online but I actually buy DVDs. I have a fairly large DVD collection as well but I view the movie industry differently than the music one. If I download a movie I like, than I go out and buy it. Movies are different because you can’t actually perform it like a concert so the only outlets are theatres and DVDs (currently). I think bootlegging also keeps quality up. If you make a crappy movie and I see it for free online then I won’t be suckered by some over hyped trailer. Movie makers need to create good movies to get people to want to own it and not just get suckered into seeing it because it looked good in the previews.
To all the rich people pissing on others to get richer I say fuck you! It’s pretty hard for me to conjure up any feelings of remorse when you drive cars that cost more than an average house. Later.

I’m not saying I don’t have illegal MP3s, but your argument doesn’t make complete sense. It still costs money to record, print, and create CDs. You expect these to just pop out for free? I can see if they just went all digital…but even then, the recording alone costs money.
And what about people that don’t live where artists tour? I mean, you don’t exactly see big names touring anywhere near small towns in middle America. How are they going to support the artists they like?
I don’t mind paying money for albums of newer artists I love on the smaller labels. Sure, the big labels are money grubbing jerks, but not all of them.

And how do you feel about not being paid most of your income on the basis that your employer doesn’t think it should have to pay you?
Copying music isn’t new. Haven’t you owned a tape recorder? I bet you recorded other people’s music before haven’t you? I never bought CDs back then either because I just made tapes and guess what; musicians survived. When Beta Max and the VCR came around there was a big deal about illegal copying, and did it happen? Yes, of course it did but industries still thrived. If you re read my post I say that people should still sell CDs because there will always be people who want to buy the music just like I will always want to own movies. MP3 is a lossy format anyway which means that it losses some of the information at higher and lower frequencies to give it its small size so audio buffs will never switch. Artists should just put out their music for free in a low quality MP3 on their own web site so people can get a taste. If they are really that good than people will either buy the CD and or go to a concert.
Anne, of course big names don’t tour little towns because it’s too much work to get on a bus or plane for them. It’s much easier recording an album and sitting back. Besides they would probably lower themselves and get off their high horse to tour smaller towns if they needed.
Let’s face it, they aren’t going broke. Record sales are still increasing although it’s been 6 years since the release of Napster and I was downloading music before Napster from IRC channels and web sites. Bottom line, I will never feel sorry for downloading music from an artist with 100 bills hanging out of their pockets and I make 25k a year.
By the looks of that ad on your side bar it seems that someone else is trying to get paid for their content. I’ve taken the liberty of reposting your article on an ad-free blog so as not to not let ‘the man’ get all of your readers down. Thanks, let us know when you’ll be on tour with this killer material. I’ll be sure to buy a ticket.
I agree with Seth. There is such a thing as an over-valued product. The music industry has a lot of them. The cost of actually producing a CD is nil. The cost of marketing adds up quick. The label’s profit is huge. The artist’s profit is huge. Bottom line, IMHO, is that they cost more than what they are worth. Why pay for for something than you think i’s worth (aka it’s value)?
Deepfry, first of all blogs are a completely different from music. Secondly, I am not rich or even close; I make just under 25k a year. Oh and lastly, the money does not go to me anyway. The Adsense account is set up with another payee for reasons I won’t discuss.
Why do people think I am saying that they shouldn’t get paid for their content? I never said that, I just said that they are overpaid and people are told to feel bad about having MP3s because they only made 10 million a year and we prevented it from being 11 or 12. Fuck em. I think Phil actually got what I was saying, I want them to get paid but don’t cry poor when your filthy rich and most of all don’t go parading around on shows like “MTV Cribs” where stars brag about how much they spend on junk.
