The current body count in Burma is being reported as 28,000+ with 33,000+ missing. Some are claiming that with disease and lack of nutrition factored in, the count could but up to 1 million dead from this thing. While that may sound bad on the surface, it’s not really a big deal.

There are 1 million refuges in the Congo and more than twice that in Darfur but they aren’t the “hip thing” at the moment. There’s suffering all over the world but we only care about it when it’s plastered all over the news.

This will last until the Democratic nominee is chosen when McCain and whomever his opponent is start going at each other’s throats until November. The media will surely shift its efforts to the election with the occasional pop star story of the day or the cat stuck in the tree bullshit that gets injected in for flavor.

So stop putting bullshit “save Burma” icons on your site and donating money to some opaque charity who doesn’t make clear how much is going into the pockets of the organizers. Save your cash and take your mother out for a steak dinner.
